Class sizes are small, which means every student will get a great deal of attention from their professors.

All the universities of New Zealand have their academic year divided into two semesters. Where semester one is from February to June and the second is from June to November. There are also some limited courses, which are offered in the summer semester. 15% of the total students are international.
There are three types of classes held in these universities:

  • Lectures: These are usually one hour long and not very interactive.
  • Labs: The duration is 1-2 hours and these sessions involve practical based work.
  • Workshops: Workshops are usually 1-2 hours long and involve interactions and discussions.

The NZQF has ten levels based on complexity, level one being the least complex and level ten the most complex. Below is the detail of every level:

Certificate Level 1-4

  • These four certificate level courses help the students attain basic knowledge in their field of interest.
  • To enter level 5 a student must have 40 credits or above in Level 4.
  • These courses usually take 6 months to one year and can even be completed alongside other studies.

Certificate Level 1-4

  • A diploma course of three levels helps a student to specialize in theoretical and technical aspects of their area of interest.

  • A master’s degree comprises of at least 240 credits where a student must have a minimum 40 credits and above at the end of level 9 and remainder at level 8. If a student holds a bachelor’s degree with honours then the remainder should be no fewer than 120 credits and if a student holds only a bachelor’s degree it should not be fewer than 180 credits.

Doctoral degree level 10

  • This is a research degree in which an individual contributes originally to their subject.
  • It requires a minimum of 360 credits.
  • It normally takes 3 years for completion.

Accommodation is an important factor, which a student must take care of before joining any university of New Zealand. They would have two options of accommodations:

Halls of residence

This is provided by the university at an additional cost apart from the fees. Here, new students have the chance of making new friends quickly. Students will be provided with the meals and 24-hour care service. This accommodation is recommended for undergraduate students who are living far from their home for the first time.

Apartments

  • A post-graduate or a research student might want to live a little independently and thus they can shift to apartment or flats. Students can even choose to homestay with a kiwi family.
  • As New Zealand is an island country, most of the food provided is seafood. This country is famed for lamb, beef and other dishes inspired from Asian and British recipes.
